What is the White Card course?

The White Card course covers CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry. It is the mandatory safety induction required before you can work on or enter a construction site in Australia.

The course covers:

  • Work health and safety law in WA, including the Work Health and Safety Act 2020, and your duty of care on site
  • Identifying construction hazards and assessing risk
  • The hierarchy of control and how risks are managed on site
  • Correct selection, fit and use of personal protective equipment
  • Safety signage and safe work method statements
  • Emergency procedures, incident reporting and communication on site
  • Safe work practices including manual handling and noise control

On successful completion you receive a Statement of Attainment for CPCWHS1001 and a WorkSafe WA White Card, recognised in every Australian state and territory.

How is the White Card assessed?

Assessment has three parts:

  • Written knowledge questions covering the topics above.
  • Verbal questioning with your trainer, so they can confirm you understand what you have learnt.
  • A practical demonstration where you show correct use of personal protective equipment, including a hard hat, high visibility clothing, eye protection and hearing protection.

Assessment is competency-based, not scored as a percentage. Your result is either Competent or Not Yet Competent, and up to three reassessment attempts are included at no additional cost. If you do not get something right the first time, your trainer will go back over it with you.

What should I study before the course?

If you are doing the blended option, the online modules take you through everything you need, with a short quiz at the end of each section to check your understanding. Complete those before you come in for your assessment and you will be well prepared.

If you are doing the face-to-face course, there is nothing to study beforehand. Everything is covered in the session.

Either way, the most useful preparation is to think about the safety topics as things you will actually use on site, rather than facts to memorise. That is how the assessment is structured.

Is the White Card test hard?

Most students find it manageable. The course is designed for people who are new to construction, and often new to Australia, so no prior experience or industry knowledge is assumed.

Support available during the course includes:

  • Language support. If English is not your first language, let us know before you enrol and we will discuss what will help.
  • Reasonable adjustment. Extra time, verbal responses instead of written ones, modified materials, or one-on-one support. These are arranged before training starts and do not change the standard you are assessed against.
  • Trainer support. Our trainers are used to working with students at all levels and will take the time to go over anything that is not clear.

Is there a video assessment?

No. Workforce Training Group completes all White Card assessment face to face at our Northbridge training centre. That means:

  • No video calls and no recordings to upload
  • Your trainer verifies your identification in person
  • You answer questions verbally and demonstrate personal protective equipment use on site with us

What do I need to bring?

  • Valid photo identification – a passport, driver’s licence or proof of age card.
  • Your USI – a Unique Student Identifier, which you can create free at usi.gov.au. We can help you set one up if you have not got one yet.

We supply all training materials and all personal protective equipment, so there is nothing else to bring.

How long does it take?

It depends which option you choose:

  • Face to face, $100. One classroom session of 5 to 6 hours.
  • Blended, $80. Online theory taking 2 to 5.5 hours at your own pace, then a 30-minute assessment in person.

When will I get my card?

Your White Card is printed and issued on the day of your face-to-face session or assessment, once you have been assessed as competent and all enrolment and identification checks are complete.

Can I enrol if I am on a working holiday visa?

Yes. The White Card is a common first step for people arriving in Perth who want to work in construction.

We also provide free practical guidance to people new to Perth, covering things like applying for a Tax File Number, job search resources for the local market, and accommodation tips. Just ask when you come in.

Can I enrol if I am under 18?

Yes. You can enrol from age 14, with additional support arrangements in place for participants under 18.
